The cast of Broadway's upcoming Almost Famous recently hit the studio with famed rock photographer Neal Preston to capture shots that will be used onstage in the new musical, which starts at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre October 3 ahead of a November 3 opening night. Go behind the scenes at the shoot in the video above, and see pictures from the session below.
Preston is best known for shooting Queen and Led Zeppelin during their 1970s U.S. tours, but his clients have also included Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bob Marley, Wham!, Whitney Houston, Heart, Duran Duran, and more. His photographs have become covers of Newsweek, Time, and Rolling Stone, and he remains one of the most-assigned photographers on staff at People.
Almost Famous is based on the 2000 film by Cameron Crowe. Set in 1973, the story follows a 15-year-old aspiring music journalist who Rolling Stone hires to go on tour with an up-and-coming rock band. The new musical features a book and lyrics by Crowe and music and lyrics by Tom Kitt.
The cast will feature Solea Pfieffer, Chris Wood, Casey Likes, Tony nominee Anika Larsen, Drew Gehling, and Rob Colletti. The company will also include Matt Bittner, Chad Burris, Gerard Canonico, Julia Cassandra, Brandon Contreras, Jakeim Hart, Van Hughes, Jana Djenne Jackson, Katie Ladner, Danny Lindgren, Erica Mansfield, Alisa Melendez, Kevin Perdido, Andrew Poston, Emily Schultheis, Daniel Sovich, Libby Winters, and Matthew C. Yee.
Almost Famous is directed by Jeremy Herrin, leading a creative team that also includes choreographer Sarah O'Gleby, music supervisor Bryan Perri, scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer David Zinn, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Peter Hylenski, hair and makeup designer Luc Verschueren, and physical movement coordinator Lorenzo Pisoni. Kitt has penned arrangements and orchestrations, and vocal design will be by AnnMarie Milazzo. The production is cast by Jim Carnahan.
