Off-Broadway News Rishi Varma's Sulfur Bottom Sets Off-Broadway Premiere

Set in a decaying home on the edge of industrial sprawl, the work explores the quiet devastation of environmental collapse.

Rishi Varma's new play, Sulfur Bottom, will premiere at Off-Broadway's Theater Center later this summer.

Playing The Jerry Orbach Theater at the midtown venue, the play will begin previews August 13, with August 20 set for opening night. The production is scheduled to play Wednesdays at 7:30 PM and Saturdays at 1 PM.

Set in a decaying home on the edge of industrial sprawl, Sulfur Bottom explores the quiet devastation of environmental collapse through the eyes of one family over 40 years.

“I wrote this play because I kept thinking about what it means to stay, even when the place you love and call home is trying to kill you,” said Varma. “When the water’s toxic and the walls are crumbling, a talking whale doesn’t feel that far off. The surreal is the only part that makes any sense”

The production will be directed by Megumi Nakamura, with additional cast and crew to be announced.
