Éponine Thénardier – Les Miserables

Also referred to as the "Jondrette Girl," Éponine is a character from the musical Les Miserables, based on the Victor Hugo novel. Presented as a ragged, independent, tragic young woman, her great solo musical number is “On My Own,” a heartbreaking song of unrequited love. The role of Éponine was originated in London and on Broadway by Tony winner Frances Ruffelle and played by Samantha Barks in the 2012 film version.

 

 

Ella - Cinderella

Anna Kendrick will be seen as Cinderella in the upcoming and highly anticipated film version of Into the Woods. In what is a different take on a similar role, Ella is the star of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, a Tony Award-winning Broadway family musical. Currently playing the Broadway Theatre, the show features some of the writers’ most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago.”

The vocally demanding role of Elphaba in Wicked is often considered one of the most sought-after lead female roles on Broadway. The hugely popular musical has been running on Broadway since 2003 and has broken box-office records all over the world. The original cast included Idina Menzel in the role of Elphaba, for which she won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

 

Jessica Burdumy: Yes. She should be in “The Last Five Years” with Jeremy Jordan after the movie comes out. Perfect timing.

 

Cathy Hiatt – The Last Five Years

From the newly released movie trailer, Anna Kendrick promises to shine as Cathy Hiatt in the upcoming film version of the musical The Last Five Years, which co-stars Jeremy Jordan.The story explores the relationship between Jamie, a rising novelist, and Cathy, a struggling actress. The musical premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was produced Off-Broadway the following year.

 

 

Sally Bowles – Cabaret

Based on the book by Christopher Isherwood, the classic musical Cabaret is set in 1931 Berlin and tells the story of a seedy nightclub where a young English performer, Sally Bowles, strikes up a relationship with an American writer. Currently playing Studio 54, the character of Sally Bowles is now being played by movie star Emma Stone, alongside Alan Cumming, a role which won him a Tony Award.  

 

 

Nikki Sinclair: I’d love to see her as Natalie in a Next to Normal revival. I think she would bring so much depth into the role!

This 2009 Broadway musical was the winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, and also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A modern-day rock musical, the story looks at a mother’s struggle with a worsening bipolar disorder and the effects of the illness on her family. Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano created the role of Natalie, the overachieving daughter who has her own struggles.

My Fair Lady, based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, is centered on the character of Eliza, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons so that she may pass as a lady. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1956 starring Julie Andrews and was revived in 1981 and 1993. An Oscar-winning film version was made in 1964 starring Audrey Hepburn in the role of Eliza.
