Fox is at work on a film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Spamalot. The movie would reunite the 2005 production’s choreographer and writer, with Tony winner Casey Nicholaw set to direct and Monty Python veteran Eric Idle to pen the screenplay, according to Deadline.
The fast-tracked project, produced by Idle and Jeremy Kramer, aims to begin production next spring.
Nicholaw received Tony nominations earlier this week for his work as both director and choreographer of Broadway’s Mean Girls; he also helms The Prom, which is set to open on Broadway in November. He previously directed an episode of Smash for the screen.
Spamalot, inspired by the 1975 cult favorite Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is the irreverent retelling of the Arthurian legend, featuring the Knights of the Round Table, a diva Lady of the Lake, and a God-given quest. The original Broadway production earned the Tony for Best Musical, plus additional wins for the late director Mike Nichols and Sara Ramirez for her performance as the Lady of the Lake.Featured in the Idle and John Du Prez score are tunes originally heard in the Monty Python catalog, including "Knights of the Round Table" and "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."
