News Michelle Obama Attends The King and I On Broadway It was a weekend of theatregoing for First Lady Michelle Obama, who took in the Tony Award-winning Broadway productions of Kinky Boots and The King and I.

The First Lady, along with her mother Marian Lois Robinson and daughters Sasha and Malia, attended the July 11 matinee of Kinky Boots. The First Lady also sent a note to the cast, praising the production, saying that they "loved every minute" of the uplifting, inclusive musical. See the personal note here.

The following day, Mrs. Obama and her mother attended a matinee of the Tony-winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, which stars Kelli O'Hara and Ken Watanabe. Representatives for the production said that Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Robinson went backstage following the performance to congratulate the company.

The Obama family has attended Broadway shows on several occasions. The President and First Lady attended the 2009 revival of Joe Turner's Come and Gone and the Tony-winning 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun. In recent months, audiences at the Public Theater found themselves in historic company when the First Lady took in a performance of the acclaimed Lin-Manuel Miranda musical Hamilton. The First Lady, her mother and daughters have also attended productions of The Trip to Bountiful, Motown, Memphis and The Addams Family.
