Michael Ball will return to his Olivier-winning role of Edna Turnblad when Hairspray the Musical plays a limited run at the London Coliseum next year.

The Tony- and Olivier-winning musical will play a 12-week engagement at the London venue beginning April 23, 2020, with an official opening April 29.

The original award-winning creative team—director Jack O'Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell—will return for the forthcoming production. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Set in Baltimore, 1962, Hairspray, based on the John Waters film of the same name, focuses on Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and big dreams. Can she make it on the local TV dance show, win the heart of teen heartthrob Link Larkin, and bring everyone together—whatever their color, size, or hairdo?

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman’s score includes “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “Big, Blonde and Beautiful,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell.

The original New York production of Hairspray won three Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, while the original West End production won four Olivier Awards, also including Best New Musical.

Hairspray is produced by Adam Spiegel Productions and Fiery Angel.
