Sony Pictures Classics has announced that the golf film The Phantom of the Open, starring Oscar, Tony, Olivier, and BAFTA winner Mark Rylance, will premiere in New York and Los Angeles June 3, prior to a wide theatrical release.

The Phantom of the Open is based on the book of the same name by Simon Farnaby and Scott Murray. It follows Maurice Flitcroft, a dreamer and unrelenting optimist who gained entry to The British Open Golf Championship Qualifying in 1976, before subsequently shooting the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. The Phantom of the Open made its world premiere at the 65th BFI London Film Festival last year to largely positive reviews.

Rylance, a three-time Tony winner, was last seen on Broadway in Farinelli and the King, with previous credits that include Twelfth Night/Richard IIIJerusalemLa Bête, and Boeing-Boeing.
