News Love for Sale, Celebrating 1930s Cabaret, Begins Jan. 12 Off-Broadway The show celebrates the works of Kurt Weill, Cole Porter, and others.

Love for Sale, a new cabaret-style two-hander musical celebrating the songwriters of the 1930s, including Cole Porter and Kurt Weill, begins Off-Broadway performances January 12 at the Soho Playhouse.

The show officially opens January 19 and is scheduled to play a limited run through February 19.

Originally developed as a site-specific project for the Wilton Music Hall in the U.K., Love for Sale (which takes its title from the Porter tune) uses the familiar songs to tell the story of a “naive American songstress” in 1934 Paris who “turns up in a café, hoping to escape the Depression and make her name...but there are other things in store for her in the City of Light.” The production subsequently moved to the St. James Studio cabaret venue in London, and then to the Edinburgh Fringe.

The U.S. premiere Off-Broadway production features London star Kelly Burke and music director Charlie Alterman (Pippin, Next to Normal), and is directed by Robert F. Gross.

Gross released a statement saying, “The cabaret culture of European capitals between the two World Wars has become legend. We think of those haunts as sexy, subversive, even louche, reflections of an unstable world lurching toward destruction. And the Huron Club, with its speakeasy past, evokes part of that desperate and—to us—glamorous moment.”

Tickets, at $40, can be ordered by calling (212) 691-1555 or clicking here.
