Nominations for the 38th annual International Spirit Awards were announced November 22, and many Broadway performers and theatre related films were recognized.

Tár, Todd Fields' drama following a fictional composer-conductor played by Cate Blanchett, received seven nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Performance for Blanchett, Best Supporting Performance by Nina Hoss, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. The fictional character Lydia Tár is a mentee of real-life legendary composer conductor Leonard Bernstein.

The International Spirit Awards have removed gender-specific requirements from their award categories, making the ceremony one of the first to be fully gender neutral. Categories such as Best Actor and Best Actress have been combined into the category Best Lead Performance, and Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress have been combined into the category of Best Supporting Performance. The Best Lead and Best Supporting categories garner 10 nominees, and a new category called Best Breakthrough Performance garners five.

Among those nominated alongside Cate Blanchett for Best Lead Performance are Tony nominee Jeremy Pope in The Inspection, and Drama Desk nominee Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie.

Tony nominee Brian D'Arcy James, currently appearing on Broadway in Into The Woods, received a nomination for Best Supporting Performance for his work on The Cathedral, alongside fellow Broadway alums Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway and Mark Rylance in Bones and All.

Drama Desk nominee Stephanie Hsu received a nomination in the inaugural Best Breakthrough Performance category for her work on Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The 38th annual ceremony will be held March 4, 2023 on the beach by the Santa Monica Pier. The ceremony will be streamed internationally on multiple digital platforms, according to Film Independent. Nominations for the Spirit Awards’ television categories will be revealed December 13.
