TheatreWorks Silicon Valley kicked off its 2022-23 season November 30 with Little Shop of Horrors, reset in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Performances continue through December 24 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

Director Jeffrey Lo has moved the setting of the classic Alan Menken-Howard Ashman musical to Chinatown to explore the cross-cultural community fostered there by marginalized people of color.

Phil Wong stars as Seymour Krelborn with Sumi Yu as Audrey, Lawrence-Michael C. Arias as Mr. Mushnik, Katrina Lauren McGraw as the voice of Audrey II, Brandon Leland as the Audrey II puppeteer, Nick Nakashima as Orin Scrivello, and Naima Alakham, Alia Hodge, and Lucca Troutman as Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronnette, respectively.

Little Shop of Horrors also features musical direction by William Liberatore, choreography by William Thomas Hodgson, scenic design by Christopher Fitzer, costume design by Fumiko Bielefeldt, lighting design by Wen-Ling Liao, and sound design by Jeff Mockus.

Taylor McQuesten serves as stage manager, with Emily Wolf as assistant stage manager.

Little Shop of Horrors is based on the cult-classic B-movie by Roger Corman and Charles Griffith. The musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre before transferring Off-Broadway to the Orpheum Theatre, where it played for five years. Little Shop subsequently became an Academy Award-nominated film starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene (repeating her stage success), and Steve Martin. The hit Off-Broadway revival continues at the Westside.
