Cancelled Black Lives Matter Benefit Gets a Second Chance at Joe’s Pub | Playbill

News Cancelled Black Lives Matter Benefit Gets a Second Chance at Joe’s Pub The Meeting* will open its eighth season with performers who were slated to appear in the canceled September 11 concert event.

Justin Sayre, host of The Meeting*, announced that his September “monthly gathering of the International Order of Sodomites,” which usually showcases LGBT comics, will also feature performers who were originally announced to appear in a September 11 concert presentation of Broadway Supports Black Lives Matter at 54 Below.

The concert was canceled last week due to conflicting viewpoints on the social issue. 54 Below management issued a statement on their decision to cancel the concerts to ticket buyers.

All proceeds from the sold-out September 18 presentation of The Meeting* at Joe’s Pub will benefit Black Lives Matter. Showtime is 9:30 PM.

According to presenters, “Sunday night’s show will include original songs from artists of color dedicated to and inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Broadway performers sharing songs in the spirit of the event, and activists educating the audience about the scope of the problems we have and how to promote positive change.”

Tony Award-winning actress Tonya Pinkins, director of the original concerts, issued the following statement: ““I am grateful to the brilliant Justin Sayre for his generous offer to donate the proceeds of his sold-out evening of The Meeting* to Black Lives Matter and Say Her Name. The Movement For Black Lives recognizes that when we silently allow oppression of anyone we tacitly invite oppression of everyone. Myself, Adriane Lenox, Abby Dobson, Michael R. Jackson, Badia Farha and African American Policy Forum and BLM are delighted to share our artivism.”
