Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: A Strange Loop Closes With Highest Grossing Week of Run

With shows closing, cumulative grosses fell to just under $34 million.

Broadway grosses continued a winter decline last week, with the 29 currently running shows bringing in just under $34 million, down from $37.4 million the week previous. The drop is expected as a number of shows played their final performances this month; January 15 was the final bow for A Strange LoopDeath of a SalesmanMike Birbiglia: The Old Man & The PoolOhio State MurdersThe Music Man, and Topdog/Underdog.

And one of those departing shows was one of the week's big winners. Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical A Strange Loop completed its run with its highest weekly gross, $955,590, beating its second highest–grossing week (the week ending June 26, 2022, shortly after the production won Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards) by nearly $100,000. It was also nearly standing room for the Michael R. Jackson musical at the Lyceum, with 99.31% of seats filled.

Speaking of filled theatres, Wicked continues to dominate in terms of amount of tickets sold. Even 3% shy of selling out, the Gershwin's massive capacity saw 13,755 theatregoers over the week's eight performances, with Aladdin at the equally large New Amsterdam coming in second with 13,476.

And yet neither of those shows broke the top five highest grossing shows of the week, led for one last time by the Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster-led revival of The Music Man at the Winter Garden Theatre with $3.6 million. While not the highest grossing week of its run, the revival nevertheless finished strong, capping off an engagement that saw it break box office records a staggering 10 times; 53 of its 54 performance weeks outperformed the previous record holder for the venue. Happily, the production used that success to give back, providing 10,000 tickets over its entire run to programs that reduce economic barriers to attending Broadway musicals. Hugh Jackman also continued his long history of fundraising record sums for Broadway Cares, bringing in more than $4 million this season.
