Basement Light Productions will present a private industry reading of Riley Elton McCarthy’s The Lesbian Play at ART/NY's South Oxford Space in Brooklyn November 30 at 7:30 PM.

Directed by Colleen Morgen, the cast for the reading will feature Lizzie Milanovich as Mimi, along with London Riley Keller, Mickey Skinner, Júlia Cerqueira, Dot Davis, Jordan Hunter-Fidalgo, Aingea Venuto, and Grayson James.

Set on the night of the 2016 presidential election, McCarthy's play follows Boston University's Women Loving Women Club who gather to celebrate a birthday while the impending patriarchal threat of the election's outcome hangs over their heads. At the party, a club member's identity is revealed, sparking inter-club turmoil as members argue with each other over how to define lesbianism and who is allowed to consider themselves a member of the LGBTQ community.

The Lesbian Play, with a revised version of the script, will head to Off-Broadway's The Triad Theater in June 2023 for its first fully-staged production.

The play originally made its workshop debut at The Tank in 2021; Common Ground Theatre Company and Marymount Manhattan College have both provided developmental support for the work, which was a semi-finalist for SheNYC Arts’ 2021 festival.
